As a cancer survior, family member or caregiver, you can play many important roles as an Cancer Research and Patient Advocate.  

Sit on study sections/committees dedicated to concept development

The Advocacy members would be involved in a number of activities:

  • Review protocols and informed consent documents
  • Review patient educational materials for potential clinical trial participants
  • Provide support to patients diagnosed with cancer, through support groups and one on one connections
  • Become a participating member of a local IRB
  • Act as an advisory panel/focus group for patient issues:
    1. Review of educational materials to support clinical trial recruitment and retention
    2. How to educate the community about oncology issues such as prevention, current treatments and available research
    3. Community awareness about available clinical trials
    4. Fund raising events
  • Act as a communication link to the  community:
    1. Tell the community about the research, clinical trials and findings
    2. Tell the institution how they are perceived in the community and what gaps in information exist
